LIONS RIDE FOR SIGHT

“Le Tour de Flinders”

conducted by Lions Club of Flinders Island

The Lions Club will once again be conducting its annual bicycle ride (this is the 7th) commencing from Lady Barron, following the Lakrana and Memana Roads to Whitemark then the main road back to Yellow Beach via Lady Barron. A total distance of 80km. An alternative ride commences from Whitemark to Yellow Beach a distance of 27km and there is even a loop around Lady Barron of some 2.5km for the not so adventurous or younger riders.

The Lions Ride for Sight is not a race but a novel way of getting cyclists onto their bicycles, sharing the camaraderie with friends and other cyclists and enjoying the magnificent scenery our special Island has to offer whilst at the same time raising funds for a very worthwhile cause.

It is proposed to conduct this years ride on Sunday 4th November 2012 commencing at 0900 from Lady Barron hall and midday from Whitemark concluding with a free barbecue at Yellow Beach for all participants.

Whilst the total route is the ultimate challenge, some participants may be happy with the 27km between Lady Barron and Yellow Beach.

Obviously some preparation will be required and it is strongly recommended that some training be undertaken to enable a comfortable and pain free day is enjoyed by all participants.

The Lions Club will man rest/water points at strategic points along the route and will also provide a “sag wagon” to pick up those who may wish to terminate prior to the finish, however with adequate preparation the challenge should be within reach of everyone.

As this will be the 7th staging of the ride following very successful rides in 2006-11  we feel that we now have acquired the expertise and experience to provide an interesting and importantly, enjoyable experience for all.  The Lions Club of Flinders Island is looking to expand on the number of participants we had last year where 23 cyclists completed the full ride, 4 completed the ride from Whitemark and there were 10 children who did the loop at Lady Barron. We very much appreciated the support from members of the Royal Victorian Aero Club and look forward to their participation again this year

We realize that getting here can be a major obstacle and have therefore arranged a travel package with Flinders Island Aviation Services to fly cyclists and their bikes from Bridport to Lady Barron on Saturday 3rd November and returning again after the ride on Sunday 4th to Bridport. The cost of this return airfare package is $300 per cyclist including their bicycle. It is hoped that people will consider making a weekend (or longer) of their visit and enjoy the spectacular beauty of Flinders as well as participating in the ride. Accommodation on the Island can be arranged through our local tourism office by phoning 1800 994 477 and talking with Megan.

The event is a fundraiser for the  Lions Club of Flinders Island and all proceeds are utilized for a program of preventable blindness. An entry fee of $20 per rider is applicable and individual sponsorship is encouraged.

Thank you and please feel free to contact me should you require any further information.
